"It depends" is true — here's what it actually depends on
Every vendor says cost depends on scope, and that's genuinely true. But it's not useful without knowing which specific factors move the number, so you can reason about your own project before you're sitting in a sales call.
The five real cost drivers
1. Feature scope
The single biggest lever, by far. A tool covering one core workflow costs a fraction of one covering fifteen. Be precise about what's actually needed for launch versus what's a "nice to have" for later — scope creep here is where budgets quietly blow out.
2. Integration complexity
Connecting to payment gateways, existing CRMs, legacy databases, or third-party APIs adds real engineering time that isn't visible in a feature list. A "simple" payments feature can mean a day of work or three weeks, depending entirely on what it needs to integrate with.
3. Team composition
A senior-only team bills higher per hour but usually costs less overall — fewer hours burned on rework, fewer production issues after launch. A cheaper junior-heavy team can end up costing more once you count the cleanup.
4. Design depth
A functional internal tool needs a fraction of the design investment a customer-facing product competing on user experience does. Know which one you're building before you budget for design.
5. Ongoing support
Maintenance and iteration after launch is a real, recurring cost that first-time buyers often forget to budget for. Ask upfront what post-launch support costs and what it includes.
Fixed price vs. time-and-materials
Fixed price only works cleanly when scope is genuinely locked upfront. If your project is likely to evolve — and most real products do — a retainer or time-and-materials model usually fits better, even though it feels less predictable on paper.
Region matters too
Rates vary significantly by where the team is based. See Custom Software Development Cost in India for actual market ranges if you're evaluating an India-based team specifically — a large part of why "software development company in India" is a common search from international buyers, not just domestic ones.
Get a real number, not a guess
Ranges help you budget; they can't replace an actual scoping conversation. Start a project and we'll give you a real estimate against your actual requirements, scoped per project rather than quoted blind.
