Why "it depends" is the honest answer — and what it depends on
Every serious software vendor will tell you cost depends on scope. That's not evasive — a login form and a multi-tenant SaaS platform are both "custom software," and pricing them the same way would be dishonest. But "it depends" isn't useful without knowing what it depends on, so here's the actual breakdown.
What moves the price
- Scope and feature count — the single biggest lever. A tool with 5 core workflows costs a fraction of one with 25.
- Integration complexity — connecting to payment gateways, existing CRMs, government APIs (GST, KYC), or legacy systems adds real engineering time beyond the visible feature.
- Team composition — a senior-only team costs more per hour but usually less overall, since fewer hours get burned on rework.
- Design depth — a functional internal tool needs far less design investment than a customer-facing product competing on UX.
- Ongoing support — post-launch maintenance and iteration is a separate, recurring cost most first-time buyers forget to budget for.
Realistic ranges in the Indian market (2026)
These are general market ranges, not a quote — treat them as a planning baseline, not a promise:
- Small internal tool / MVP (single core workflow, minimal integrations): roughly ₹3–8 lakh
- Mid-size business application (multiple workflows, a few integrations, real design work): roughly ₹8–25 lakh
- Full platform / SaaS product (multi-tenant, payments, admin tooling, scalable architecture): ₹25 lakh and up, often significantly more depending on complexity
India-based development is typically priced well below US/UK/EU rates for comparable senior-engineer quality — this is a large part of why "software development company in India" is a common search from international buyers, not just domestic ones.
Fixed price vs. time-and-materials
Fixed price works when scope is genuinely well-defined upfront. Time-and-materials (or a retainer) works better when the project is expected to evolve — which, honestly, most real products do. A good vendor will tell you which model fits your project instead of defaulting to whichever is easier for them to bill.
