Ask what they actually build on
WordPress-only shops and custom-development studios are different businesses solving different problems, even though both say "web development." Check their performance track record, not just design
Ask to see real Core Web Vitals numbers or load times from sites they've actually shipped, not just design screenshots. A beautiful site that loads slowly costs conversions and search ranking regardless of how good it looks.
Ask about SEO ownership upfront
Confirm whether technical SEO — metadata, sitemap, structured data, canonical tags — is included in the build or treated as a separate add-on. This should be built in by default on any serious web project, not upsold afterward.
Confirm the content workflow
If non-technical team members need to update content after launch, confirm exactly how — a CMS, a dashboard, or a request-based process. This should be settled before the project starts, not discovered after handoff.
Ask about post-launch support
Hosting recommendations, ongoing maintenance, and how bugs found after launch get handled should all be clear before you sign — not negotiated after something breaks.
